Platform Specific Notes

Table 1.2. Platform Specific Notes

AIX (IBM)
  • Support for querying SCSI devices has been added as of SysInfo™ version 4.2. However, devices in use - especially disks in use - will not contain the additional SCSI data because AIX (through at least version 4.3.3) does not provide a means of querying a SCSI device which is already in use.

HP-UX
  • If you are running HP-UX 11.00 you must install a current HP Quality Pack or else the SysInfo™ Agent will not work. To obtain a current QP from HP, please visit http://www.esca.hp.com/us/.

  • When obtaining software class information on HP-UX, SysInfo™ may appear to be sluggish taking several minutes to gather information depending on the speed and hardware configuration of the system. It may also use lots of memory (20-70MB). These problems are due to the use of the HP-UX swlist command which is both slow in outputting information and copious in its output.

MacOS X
  • The SysInfo™ GUI requires that you have Apple's X11 package (in older MacOS releases this is called X11 User for OS X) installed prior to installing SysInfo™. These packages are not part of MacOS X 10.1 - 10.2 and must be downloaded from Apple at http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx. On MacOS X 10.3 and later, this package is located on the MacOS X installation disc, but is usually not installed by default.

  • SysInfoPrinter class data is supported on MacOS X 10.2 or later. It is not supported on earlier releases.

Sun Solaris
  • Very little hardware related data will be reported when SysInfo™ is run inside a Solaris container (aka zone) that is not the top level global container. This is due to security restrictions in the container system.

  • Support for collecting License class data from Macrovision's FLEXlm works with Solaris 7 and later.

  • VESA Extend Display Identification Data (EDID) for monitors appears to only be available from Creator Series 2 (FFB2) and later Creator frame buffers. No sign of EDID data on any other Sun framebuffer so far.

Linux
  • Kernel class data is not supported on Linux.

  • RPM package version 4.2.3 or later is required for reliable Software class data. Older versions of the RPM package are prone to hanging which will result in little or no Software class data being reported.

FreeBSD
  • FreeBSD 5.0 and 5.1 are not supported due to bugs in the OS provided stdarg wide string functions like vswprintf().

Windows
  • On Windows XP x64 SP1, SysInfo™ will not report much, if any data due to significant bugs in the Windows bundled DLLs. This problem is fixed by applying a current set of Microsoft Security Updates via Microsoft Update, Windows Update, or manually. The exact update which fixes these problems is not known.
